EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)

EFT, or Tapping, is a remarkable method of reducing and often eliminating negative emotions such as fear, anxiety, shame and anger to name just a few. The process is often quick, painless and simple to learn, with results that are real and permanent.

To use EFT you tap on points on your face, upper body and hands while focusing on the emotional issue you want to resolve. These tapping points are linked to the meridians, the ancient Chinese energy pathways in the body that are used in acupuncture. However with EFT instead of using needles to balance the energy, a light tapping technique is used instead. In fact EFT is often referred to as “Emotional Acupuncture”.
As you tap, you focus on the problem, and therefore cause a disruption in your energy system. You will often be able to feel this disruption, not just as the emotion but also physically as churning in your stomach or a tightness in your chest or throat, for example. Tapping while you are thinking about your problem will balance the body’s energy so that there is no longer a disruption and you will no longer experience the negative emotion. Fears, phobias, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and many other longstanding emotional problems have been easily cleared this way.
At Fertile Mindset I love to apply EFT to the many emotional issues tied up in infertility and trying to conceive for too long. I often hear infertility described as an ‘emotional rollercoaster’ which can be the most unpleasant of rides with no apparent way to leave. EFT enables you to slow down and stop the emotional rollercoaster of infertility, and help you find a positive way forward on your journey.
Where did this idea of Tapping come from?
The predecessor of EFT was TFT (Thought Field Therapy) which was discovered by Dr Roger Callahan in 1980. While working with a client with an intense water phobia that she could feel as a sensation in her stomach he asked her to tap on her stomach meridian point (located just under the eye). She immediately felt complete relief from her fear and it never returned! With this success Callahan went on to research and develop TFT.
In 1995, Gary Craig, a student of Dr Callahan’s, simplified the process and made it more accessible giving us EFT.
